2023/KW32 ETC'23 | Mens M45

by Alex Sweetman

After a valiant effort the Swiss Men’s 45 team were unfortunately not able to match the Women’s 27’s and Mens 30”s teams and bring back a medal this time.

After a promising start with a 10-7 victory over France in the first game we then came up against a strong England side who put on a dominant display. With a good 12 - 3 win against Italy our final group game was against Wales which we lost 5-3 despite a strong performance.

With the injury list growing the crucial game against Scotland (again!) came early on the Friday morning. In this very close game we were left to reflect on some missed opportunities as we came out on the wrong side losing 6-5. This loss meant we had to play France again in the afternoon who had been steadily improving through the group games. Again we narrowly came out on the wrong side losing 9-7. Now out of medal contention we played an enjoyable match against Italy in our final match winning 11-2 and finishing up in 5th place overall. The final was again a contest between England and Wales with England taking the gold medal for the 2nd tournament in a row.

The effort and commitment of the team, management and coaches can not be faulted. Letting in a few too many tries on day one and not capitalising on a few opportunties during the close games with Wales, Scotland, and France ultimately cost us.

Egg representative Alex Sweetman played in all 7 matches scoring 13 tries during the tournament.

A big thank you to all at the club for the support and training in the run up to this event and especially to the wider M45 community at the club (Roger, Romain, Bogdan) for their dedicated contributions to the M45 training squad.
